UOW research team make it to top Indonesian information magazine

Peta Jakarta, SMART’s crowd-sourcing data collection project that harnesses the power of social media to gather, sort, and display information about flooding in Jakarta in real time, was recently featured in one of Indonesia's oldest and most respected publications, Tempo.

Understanding the value of the project to its readership, the magazine outlined the importance and relevance of the project to the community with a featured article in it's Indonesian publication.

Jakarta’s citizens are well-known for their love of social media, and the city has been dramatically affected by increasingly severe and costly flood events in recent years. 

The PetaJakarta.org project channels the strength of these local habits to address this urgent problem while creating a valuable pilot study for the development of a framework for data gathering and analysis. This innovative project is developing a web-based platform that uses social media to gather, sort, and display information about flooding, inundation, and critical water infrastructure in Jakarta.

At present, the team are on the ground in Jakarta working with the Jakarta Emergency Management Agency (BDBP DKI) and the community.  Accompanying them is on this latest trip, are a select group of UOW students, who have traveled to Jakarta to gain valuable experience and provide key support for the project’s data collection.
